Halloween was my first Uberthons event, so I wasn't really sure what to expect, but they promise to provide professional races that are a good value and a fun way to be active, and they totally follow through. The Halloweenathon events benefit Hands & Voices, an organization supporting deaf/hard of hearing children and their families.
I love that Halloweenathon isn't just a single event... it's a whole day of events! Check it out:
The race entry fee is reasonable and stays the same no matter when you register (as long as the event hasn't reached capacity), and includes a bib with timing chip and two coupons. There weren't event shirts, which was too bad because the Halloweenathon logo is fantastic! There isn't a goodie bag--you could grab a few coupons for Sports Authority--but I usually end up throwing most of that stuff away anyway.
Although the race is 45 minutes away from Vancouver, The Reserve Vinyard & Golf Course is a great venue. The golf course is gorgeous, and there's TONS of parking (there isn't a bag check because you can just hop out to your car). There's a nice covered pre- and post-race tent with some heaters (a couple of extra would have been nice but most races don't have them at all!)
The starting area is small and groups of runners were released in quick waves to try to ease congestion on the course. It's a very very narrow course--just a paved golf cart path, sometimes only 1/2 the path since out/backs. The 5k course was a single loop on the path, the 10k was two loops, and the 15k was three loops--not my ideal course type, especially since it it was so crowded. There were a lot of groups (friends, kids and parents) who took up the entire path and it was hard to get around them, which was a little frustrating. It did thin out a little later on. There were on course photographers, but I was kind of underwhelmed by the photos.
At the finish line, I was handed a super awesome medal (it's probably one of my favorites!!), and there was water, ZICO coconut water (YUMMMM). Inside the tent, was an awesome nacho bar (chips, nacho cheese, black beans, jalapenos, sour cream, olives) as well as regular post-run snacks (bananas, etc). Overall, a pretty great event!!! I can't wait to do my next Uberthons event.
