I've been curious about Matcha Green Tea powder for awhile now, because I've heard the studies that show the health benefits, and have heard anecdotes from friends about how good green tea is for you,
The bag seems small at only four ounces (113 grams), but there are probably about 60 1/2 teaspoon servings in there. If you haven't tried matcha before, you may want start with a small amount mixed into something else like a smoothie. The texture and flavor can be a little overwhelming at first until you get used to it. My favorite way to get my matcha: Pistachio-Matcha-Spinach protein shake! The matcha flavor works well with the pistachio flavor, and it's all green! AAAAND it's a fab meal replacement, being under 450 calories with 50 grams of protein! I used Dashing Dish's protein shake recipe as a staring point, and then modified it (a lot).
Marilyn's Matcha/Pistachio/Spinach Triple Green Protein Shake!
Ingredients:
6c spinach
2/3c fat free cottage cheese
1 bottle Core Power Vanilla protein drink
1/2 small package of Jello sugar free fat free pistachio pudding mix
1 teaspoon Matcha Green Tea powder
sweetener of your choice (I used splenda), to taste
ice
Put all the spinach and 1/2 of the Core Power into the blender, blend well until completely smooth. Add the remaining ingredients and blend well. You can reduce the amount of spinach (I can't taste it, but if you're not used to it, start with just a little bit and work your way up!). If you want a lower calorie shake (for a snack maybe) you can use water instead of Core Power (which has about 240 calories and 24g protein). The cottage cheese sounds weird, but it helps give this smoothie a creamier texture.
Funny story: the very first time I made a smoothie with the matcha powder, I didn't look at the serving size carefully, and instead of putting one TEASPOON of matcha into my smoothie, I put one TABLESPOON. It didn't taste very good, and I was really caffeinated for a few hours. Don't make my mistake. Unless you like bouncing off the walls all morning.
In all, I like adding Matcha Green Tea powder into things I eat and like that the caffeine doesn't cause me to crash later on. There are lots of possible ways to use it--I don't cook much, or bake (unless you count break apart cookies...), so I didn't really explore those. The recipe guide does have a lot of options though, which is a nice starting point if you have some skills in the kitchen. The prices on matcha green tea vary GREATLY, and I haven't tried any other matcha powders, so I can't really compare the quality.
