Deal or dud? Beyond the Rack and their pricing scam

2/16/2013

I purchased a MAC eyeshadow from Beyond the Rack a while back for less than full MSRP, and it seemed to be authentic, so I was happy with BTR. But recently, I noticed that Beyond the Rack is doing something kind of fishy. They're misrepresenting the MSRP on many MAC products as being much higher than it actually is, and then putting the Beyond the Rack price as higher than the actual MSRP. So you're often times paying MORE than you would if you ordered direct from MAC, or went to a MAC counter or store! AND you have to pay shipping!

Take a look at these screenshots taken from Beyond the Rack and from MACcosmetics.com (click to enlarge the pictures):

There were some products that had an accurate "full price" listed--a few eyeshadows and a few lipsticks were listed as being about $15.00, which is accurate, for example--and the Beyond the Rack sale price was lower--$12.99 each.

Knowing what I know now, I would not purchase from Beyond the Rack again, and I just want to share this info with anyone considering buying from them! And I'm definitely going to be more careful when it comes to buying from ANY flash sale site.

Have you ever ordered from a flash sale site? Were you happy with the deal and the product?

OMG! I have a few sites I watch and there are sometimes good deals and sometimes not-so-good deals (I do typically check the regular price and Amazon price before I'll buy from a deal site), but I've never noticed them posting a price HIGHER than what you'd pay on the main distributor's site! That's ridiculous. I'll steer clear of Beyond the Rack.

It's one thing to not have a very good deal, it's another thing altogether to be misleading! I usually only buy things that I know the MSRP of.

I've noticed a lot of really iffy things on a lot of the deal sites lately, but nothing as bad as misleading the MSRP and selling for higher. I buy from NoMoreRack occasionally and a few days ago, they had a refurbished Nexus 7 for $189. They are $199 brand new. :(
