If you love to run and admire Oregon's natural beauty, you won't ever want to miss the 2014 Huckleberry Half marathon and 10K! A quintessential Mt. Hood experience, the route is mostly a large loop on all-paved flat and rolling hills. Six miles of the half marathon leads runners beyond the border of the National Forest road to the turnaround at the Green Canyon trailhead—with scenery of the Salmon River, campground and bridge all along.
The event is chip timed, and the half marathon is a certified course. If you've wanted to explore the Mt. Hood area up close, you're off to a running start here!
It's time for the second annual Huckleberry Half & 10k run/walk! I participated in this race last year, and thought that it was really well done and very fun (although a few 10k speedsters were misdirected by volunteers, and ended up running extra miles, they were offered free entries to this year's race). Last year all participants received a wooden Big Foot medal, but it looks like this year only half marathon finishers will receive one. There will also be a BEER GARDEN this year!
I really love that this year's race will benefit Mount Hood Kiwanis Camp, a cause that's near and dear to my heart! My high school (Jesuit H.S.) required that all students did two weeks of community service prior to graduation as part of being "men and women for others", so I decided to two weeks volunteering at Mount Hood Kiwanis Camp as a junior counselor for kids and young adults with disabilities. It was two of those most challenging and most rewarding weeks of my life. I am so incredibly impressed by the work that Mount Hood Kiwanis Camp does, and am so happy to see a race that I love benefit a charity that I love!
