Mind on my money and my money on my mind: Holidays, Mortgages, and Vegas.

Lately I've been thinking about money--spending it, saving it, and splurging a little. I've started using Mint.com to help me budget and keep track of all of my spending across all of my bank accounts and credit cards and loans. My fiance and I are looking at buying a house (which means a mortgage!), and Christmas is coming up, so I'm trying to save as much money as I can. And then my company is paying for my branch to take a trip to Las Vegas in January (although it will be free flight/hotel/food, I know I'll want to splurge and go shopping on the strip!).

And in addition to the shopping, there's something about going to Vegas that makes me feel like I should gamble. I mean, people go there just to do that. And if it's a free trip, a little voice in my head goes "why not gamble?". But I like money to be simple--I like to have a certain amount of money pay for a certain amount of things, which have a defined price. But gambling isn't like that. It's chance, mostly. There is some skill involved, but since I totally lack any skill in that area, for me it'd be plain ol' luck. And my luck won't cut it if I don't want to lose all my money!

Gambling is really popular--millions of people go to casinos each year. But it's not just casinos--there's horse racing, bingo, the lottery... And now you can gamble from the comfort of your own home (like http://www.foxybingo.com). I've only ever gambled a few times--bunco a few times, an NCAA basketball bracket, and a few penny slot machines. Mostly it was just because it was a social activity. I know a lot of my coworkers do like to gamble though, so I'd consider doing some cheap slot machines just for kicks. Mostly I think I'll save my money and stuff my face at all of the buffets ;)

Do you gamble? Have you ever been to Vegas?

I don't gamble. Gambling is a secret tax on people that don't understand probability. I haven't been to Las Vegas in over 30 years. Last time I actually went to see some of the shows and eat at some of the best restaurants in the country. Haven't been back since I moved to Washington. I might go again one of these days just to see some of the new attractions, but will not be leaving any money on the tables or in the machines.

Vegas is fun for a weekend! I'm not a huge gambler but the slot machines are fun.

Good point about probability! I've only been to Vegas once before, and it was just eating and sightseeing. I'm hoping to see Cirque du Soleil this trip!
