Beauty Box 5 is a monthly subscription service that delivers five beauty or skincare samples to your doorstep for only $12 a month (and the shipping is free)! Ordering recurring boxes gives you an even greater discount.
Let's take a peek at this month's goodies, shall we?!
Aveeno Positively Nourishing Calming Body WashLast month's BB5
also had an Aveeno product. While I think Aveeno makes great products, they're readily available, so getting one in a sample box is kind of a letdown. It has a pleasant sweet, clean smell to it. At least I can use it!Secret Clinical Strength Antiperspirant & Deodorant
While this is fantastic deodorant, like the Aveeno products, Secret is so mainstream that it's kind of underwhelming to get this in a sample box. Also, there was supposed to be a manufacturer's coupon for a FREE deodorant, but I didn't have one in my box (there was a Travalo mini atomizer 25% off coupon?). It's a bit more expensive than your regular deodorant/antiperspirant, but if you need the strong stuff, or work out a lot, it's better to just shell out the extra buck or two. FYI: I've heard it's better to apply antiperspirant at night so it has more time to take effect!Body Drench Lip Drench
I got this in Coconut Lime. I really like it because the fragrance is "real"... it actually smells like coconut and limes! It's moisturizing too. $4.99 is a little much for lip balm though--that's about twice what I'd prefer to pay.Bellapierre Cosmetics Shimmer Powder
I recieved "Ha Ha" which is a royal blue shimmery eye shadow. The color is pretty bold, but it's a fun pop of color on the lower lashline, blended out. While the color isn't the easiest to wear, the texture is smooth and it applies well, without too much fallout for a loose shadow.
Montagne Jeunesse Glacial Cooling Face Mask
This was interesting. And it looked terrifying. Kinda reminiscent of the Scarecrow in Batman... but it felt GREAT. It was the same texture and thickness as the makeup removing wipes that I usually use, but coated in a green-tinged clay mixture. It felt cold and refreshing on my skin. I left it on for the 10-15 minutes recommended on the packaging, and when I peeled it off and washed off the excess, my skin felt great--really smooth and refreshed. I wouldn't use these all the time, but it's a cheap splurge once in awhile and would be really fun at a girls' night in, no matter what age you are! :)
Lots of practical products in the November Beauty Box 5! While the Secret deodorant/antiperspirant and Aveeno body wash were a little disappointing because they're not really novel products, they're still very useful, and the cooling mask and lip balm also fit well into the theme of "Prep. Primp. Sparkle."--being ready for whatever the night may bring! As I've said before, while subscription boxes aren't the best use of money for gals who are particular, they can be FANTASTIC for those travelling, or gals looking to try a lot of products without committing to full-sized products.
Top: fresh Sugar, Bottom: fresh Sugar Rose.
fresh Sugar Kisses Mini Lip Duo
$22.50 for 0.15 oz (full size)
Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 blends reparative oils and waxes with real sugar, a natural humectant, for delectable and dependable moisture. Sweet and tart black currant oil, rich in plumping essential fatty acids, cushions the lips while antioxidant grapeseed polyphenols and vitamins A, C, and E provide protection from wrinkle-causing free radicals. It also provides essential, year-round protection from damaging UV rays. This lip-loving essential has a bright, citrus scent and is free of petroleum, mineral oil, and lanolin.
Last October, I could hardly wait for my FREE SEPHORA BEAUTY INSIDER BIRTHDAY GIFT, because it was a mini lip duo of the cult fave, fresh Sugar Kisses balm. After testing it, I wasn't so excited, and couldn't imagine why this balm is mentioned in magazines all the time!
Sugar is clear, and Sugar Rose is a slightly red tinted balm. Both are have a nice glossy sheen to them. The scent of these is only okay (a hint of rose). While the texture is smooth, it does not moisturize very well, and the stick of balm seems fragile in the tube (which you have to unscrew). The metal casing definitely feels nicer and more substantial than your typical lip balm packaging, , and the SPF is a definite bonus, but it still isn't enough to justify the price tag. It's not a BAD product, but given the price tag and all of the favorable press it gets, I expected this to be near Holy Grail material. But even though it was free, I've hardly used it.
I kind of wish I had an awesome sister with whom I could co-found a makeup business... And while I don’t have any sisters, I can live vicariously through the founders of SweetPea & Fay
, Katrina and Amanda. This duo created a 100% natural, hand-crafted makeup line using their knowledge as a licensed skin care therapist and as a makeup artist. Their focus is on professional quality makeup that’s affordable and free of harmful ingredients, as well as being cruelty free. SweetPea & Fay Mineral Eyeshadow
$4.99 for 1.0 gram
Ingredients: Mica, sericite, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, tin oxide
-nude/sand with golden/silver shimmer when wetPandimonium
-mint green when dry, green patina with golden shimmerChupacabra
-shimmery darkened taupe when dry, chocolate brown with bronze when wet
I love that there are swatches of every shade of eye shadow on their website! It's really helpful, especially for mineral eye shadows, which tend to be more variable than regular eye shadows when comparing the appearance of the product in the pan/jar to the swatch. They're really affordable and pretty decent in terms of texture and pigmentation. For me, they have pretty standard length of wear, and with a primer they last all day. I like that these shadows come in a sifter jar--that makes them slightly less messy compared to other mineral shadow.Lipgloss +Spandex:
SweetPea & Fay Lip Balm
$4.99 for 1.0 gram
Ingredients: Beeswax, Caruba wax, extra virgin olive oil, mica, french vanilla flavor oil, stevia, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, tin oxide
orangey tan creamGhost of Petra
-hot pink cremeApparition
-soft pearl pink with shimmer
These are great tinted lip balms. They have a faint vanilla scent and come in clear plastic mini tubes--all details that I like. Crop Circles really didn't look good on me, and Apparition was a touch frosty for my skin tone, but I loooooove Ghost of Petra. The color is gorgeous and can easily be built up by layering on the balm, and it also leaves your lips with a nice stain. The price is pretty good as well.Lipgloss + Spandex rating:
SweetPea & Fay also carries loose mineral powder foundation, liquid lipstick, and lip gloss.
I'm a huge fan of good bath and body products, so I was incredibly excited that Iwona at Best Bath Store
was kind enough to send me goodies to review on Lipgloss and Spandex!Best Bath Store
makes all of their 100% natural, cruelty-free products right here in US. Each item is hand packaged, labeled and sealed in recyclable packaging, and the company is entirely powered by wind energy. That's pretty cool!
$3.95 for 0.15 oz (standard lip balm sized tube)
I tested out both the Lemon-Lime Lip Balm
and the Vanilla and Coffee (vegan) Lip Balm
. Both balms are quite fragrant, but not in an unpleasant way. They have a soft texture, but the do feel a little slick on my lips. The Vanilla and Coffee lip balm feels the slightest bit gritty during application, but feel completely smooth on the lips. These keep my lips moisturized for a couple of hours. I like the translucent tube a lot! Ingredients-Lemon lime: Cocoa Butter, Beeswax, Almond Oil, Lemon Essential Oil, Lime Essential Oil, Vitamin E
Ingredients-Vanilla and Coffee (vegan): Jojoba oil, Cocoa Butter, Candelilla Wax, Shea Butter, Coffee Essential Oil, Vanilla Essential Oil, Vitamin E
ACNE FACIAL BAR
$4.95 for 3.5 oz
The Acne Facial Bar
is supposed to "restore and revitalize your skin to its natural balance." It has a definite herbal smell to it, but I didn't find it unpleasant. It lathers nicely. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to help my skin at all. My face went to its typical acne-plagued state. However, the quality of the soap is good, and I've been using it on my bod instead. While this particular soap didn't work on my face, I would LOVE to buy some of the other body soaps. They come in a sheer mesh bag with a tag, which looks nice enough to give as a gift! Ingredients: Olive Oil, Palm Oil, Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Hazelnut Oil, Castor Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Sunflower Oil, Organic Manuka Honey, Seaweed Powder, White Willow Bark Extract, Australian Olive Green Clay, Vitamin E, Essential Oil Blend
SWEETHEART BATH BOMB
$5.95 for 9 oz.
Can we say CUTEST BATH BOMB EVER?! The Sweetheart Bath Bomb
has Neroli, Jasmine, and Ylang Ylang essential oils to help you relax. This roughly tennis ball sized bath bomb is incredibly dense, and creates a powerful fizzing jet in the tub. It doesn't have any glitter or color or other surprises, but it smells great (kind of like Earl Gray tea). This bath bomb will leave a slight residue on your skin, which some bathers may love and some may find too oily. It comes nicely packaged, shrink-wrapped in a plastic box. Ingredients: Baking Soda, Citric Acid, Avocado Oil, Jojoba Oil, Red Beet Juice Powder, Essential Oil Blend
Overall, I really enjoyed the products that I received from Best Bath Store
, and I look forward to trying some of their other products.
